U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Hamas should agree to the most recently proposed cease-fire deal. During his visit to Jordan, Secretary Blinken said that there are “no more excuses,” describing the latest proposal as “extraordinarily generous.”
The secretary said, “Our focus right now is on getting a cease-fire and hostages home. That is the most urgent thing, and it’s also I think what is achievable because the Israelis have put a strong proposal on the table. They’ve demonstrated that they’re willing to compromise, and now it’s on Hamas.”
He continued, “In this moment, the only thing standing between the people of Gaza and a ceasefire is Hamas.”
Secretary Blinken has been seeking to get more humanitarian assistance into Gaza. He said, “This has been part of our work every single day. It’s also been the focus of every single one of my trips to the region.”
The secretary has also been negotiating for a security agreement to normalize relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel. He stated at the World Economic Forum, “The work that Saudi Arabia, the United States have been doing together in terms of our own agreements, I think, is potentially very close to completion.” He added that calm in Gaza and a “credible pathway to a Palestinian state“ are required for the normalization to move ahead.
